Getting your first Tattoo
-
Yes, tattoos hurt to some degree, but the level of pain varies based on your pain tolerance and the location of the tattoo. Areas with more fat or muscle (like the upper arm or thigh) tend to hurt less than bony or sensitive areas (like ribs, ankles, or the spine).
-
Common less painful areas include the outer upper arm, forearm, thigh, and calf. These spots have more flesh and fewer nerve endings, making the experience more tolerable.

Using numbing cream is a personal choice. It can reduce discomfort during the tattooing process, especially if you're nervous about pain or getting a tattoo in a sensitive area. However, not all artists recommend it—some believe it can affect how the skin reacts to ink or change its texture.
If you're considering it:
Always ask our tattoo artist first—some prefer to apply it themselves or may not work with it at all.
Use a reputable, tattoo-safe product (like those with lidocaine).
Apply it exactly as directed—usually 30–60 minutes before the appointment.
Numbing cream won’t make the process pain-free, but it can take the edge off.

Infection
Allergic reactions to ink
Scarring or keloids
Proper aftercare helps prevent and minimise these risks and side effects.

Please refer to our Aftercare information.
